For its 11th anniversary, on February 29 – March 9th, 2020, in the Magdalen Islands, Le Rendez-vous loup-marin bears the theme of Feminine Outlook on Seal and a diversified and interesting new programming, with most of its participants female.
It is with great joy that we welcome chefs Johanne Vigneau, from La Table des Roy restaurant, and Brenda Poirier, chef from the same restaurant, as well as the finalist from Les chefs 2019 show. These chefs will collaborate with longtime contributor chef Jacques Leblanc, from Bistro Plongée Alpha, and all three will put together the all-popular Seal Dinner.
This year, we will present three films that focus on seal hunting, among others one made by a Newfoundlander Ann Troake, who will attend in person to present documentary entitled My ancestors were rogues and murderers. We will also show Sealers, One Last Hunt by a Norwegian director Gry Elisabeth Mortensen. Finally, we will conclude with an evening of a few short films “Films de chasse Chassomaniak”, some of which were made on the Islands, including one on seal hunting, with Mathieu Pouliot in attendance.
During the Rendez-vous loup-marin, the participants will also be privy to three art exhibitions. At the Seal Museum, we begin with Bon goȗt frais des Îles, Savourez l’hiver, a foray into seal on a plate. An exhibition entitled “Femme phoque” by Jennifer Boudreau, exceptionally multidisciplinary artist, will follow; it will end with an exhibition by artist-painter Dolorès Cyr, held at the provincial M.P. Joël Arseneau’s office.
We are adding two new conferences, on the same evening, following the usual “Happy Hour”. You will be able to hear Dr. Pierre-Yves Daoust, the well-known veterinarian and professor, during his conference entitled “Seal health and public health. Three years’ worth of studies.” It will be followed by the socio-anthropological research study on pinnipeds “When seals talk about us”, from Gaëlle Ronsin, Nathalie Lewis and Geneviève Brisson, from the Rimouski University of Quebec.
This year, the Seal Center is hosting a new family-oriented workshop on making jewelry from seal claws with artist Émie Audet.
We will also have the opportunity to host the conference-exhibition-concert by Sven Meier, entitled “The music and seals”. The participants will have an extraordinary experience to listen to Sven’s recount of playing for seals and listen to his fiddle.
For those who have not had a chance to visit the “Iles-de-la-Madeleine” for Rendez-vous loup-marin, we will present, for the second year in a row, our show live on our Facebook page and on airways at CFIM l’Île Imagin’ air radio. Our guests will present their Feminine Outlook on Seal.
Of course, the classics are back in 2020. We will pay a tribute at the Galerie-Bar-spectacles Les Pas Perdus, preceded by the exhibition of artists, designers and manufacturers inspired by seals. We already received confirmation from Rachel Drouin Creations, artist-painter Domic Lefrançois, artist-painter Amelie Renaud, and jewelry designer Monique Ratelle, will all be present. You will also have the opportunity to taste burgers and other seal meat dishes from the Boucherie Côte-à-Côte. Local artist Josée Lapierre will perform two songs paying tribute to the evening.
The Rendez-vous loup-marin Lunch Menu is also back, offering brunch and croquignoles at the Salicorne restaurant, the “Sealers Mass” at the Ste-Madeleine Church in Havre-aux-Maisons and the “Croxifête” serving croquignoles and dedicated bingo games and, last but not least, monitoring of seal pups, organized by Hôtel Accents. Participants also have the opportunity to visit companies that work with seal meat on our archipelago.
Since 2010, Intra-Quebec Sealers Association has been coordinating stakeholders’ collaboration to ensure the sustainability of this event in order to promote all that has anything to do with seal, including fine cuisine, arts, craftsmanship, tourism and the industry.
Le Rendez-vous loup-marin is a truly unique and rallying event that allows for understanding and experiencing the nature of this sea mammal. We are all eager to see you in early March at Le Rendez-vous loup-marin in the Magdalen Islands!
